Elevating Animal-Assisted Activities through the H.O.R.S.E.S. Framework of Reflective Supervision

Join HHRF and Michael Remole MA, LCPC, NCC, I/ECHMHC on Wednesday, June 17, 2026 at Noon (ET) as we learn how effective reflective practice contributes to improved job performance, job satisfaction, animal welfare, and burnout prevention, emphasizing its significance in therapeutic settings; and gain insights into the foundational concepts of the HORSES framework, which enhances reflective supervision practices by promoting self-awareness, emotional regulation, and understanding the impact of the human-animal relationship.

In the field of animal-assisted therapy, the role of the professional is paramount to the success of therapeutic interventions. Unlike traditional counseling settings, where the client’s identity and history are known, animals engage with professionals without preconceived notions, making the therapeutic relationship distinctly dynamic. This unique aspect underscores the necessity for practitioners to engage in intentional reflection regarding the personal impacts of their sessions. The HORSES Framework in Reflective Supervision provides a structured approach for professionals to examine how their experiences shape interactions with clients and animals. By reflecting on these sessions, practitioners can better understand their emotional responses, identify areas of personal growth, and acknowledge the therapeutic effects of their relationships with both clients and equine partners. This process not only enhances service delivery but also supports the mental and emotional well-being of practitioners, ultimately benefiting clients and animals alike. Moreover, engaging in reflective supervision is crucial for reducing burnout among professionals in animal-assisted therapy. By fostering self-awareness and promoting emotional regulation, practitioners can cultivate resilience and maintain a healthy work-life balance. In a field that often confronts complex emotional challenges, equipping professionals with the tools to reflect and grow is vital for sustaining enthusiasm and efficacy in their practice. Keeping skilled, healthy professionals in the animal-assisted therapy landscape is critical for providing quality services that prioritize both human and animal welfare. This presentation addresses these essential components, spotlighting the need for reflective practices as a means to enhance therapeutic outcomes, improve service quality, and sustain the well-being of those dedicated to this transformative work. By attending this webinar, participants will gain the insights necessary to adopt and implement the HORSES Framework in their reflective supervision practices, solidifying their impact in the field.
