STANDING IN YOUR CLIENTS' SHOES THROUGH EAA/T FOR POST TRAUMATIC STRESS

Dr. Shkedi will guide participants through a process to examine how EAA/T practitioners can deepen their understanding and stay open with a fresh focus on the individuals with Post Trauma, providing them with individualized EAA/T strategies that will help the client address their specific needs in the present time. Dr. Shkedi will consider how practitioners might effectively stand in clients’ shoes in order for their knowledge of humans and horses to address specific clienttrauma related issues. She will discuss how, through somatic experiences, clients can be relaxed and helped to move from survival mode and avoidance towards positive thoughts and feelings, and ultimately self-management, emphasizing how relationships with horses provide holistic energetic healing for those who are suffering post trauma.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Anita Shkedi began her career in health care as a registered nurse in the UK. She specialized in pediatrics and obstetrics, and then after further academic studies practiced as a Health Visitor for an additional ten years. During that time, she developed a solid theoretical and practical understanding of pathologies and the manifestations of human challenges. Paralleling this Para-medical career, which was filled with curious knowledge with her passion for horses and success as an equestrian, she found that she had skills that could change the lives of many challenged and disabled people. Integrating medical knowledge, education and equestrian skills, she was able to work as an Equine Assisted Activities Therapist (EAA/T) practitioner for challenged and disabled people. Dr. Anita Shkedi founded Therapeutic Horseback Riding in Israel in 1985, and developed Israel’s official diploma curriculum for therapeutic horseback riding at the Nat Holman School of Coaches at the Wingate Institute of Physical Education in 1988, which became the springboard for multiple other related therapeutic studies. She has a Masters degree, from Liverpool University, and a Doctorate in Education from the University of Derby in the UK, specializing in curriculum building for EAA/T. She is the author of the book Traumatic Brain Injury and Therapeutic Riding (2012) and Horse Heal PTSD: Walking New Paths (2021) and has written numerous articles published in professional journals. Dr. Shkedi lectures and consults worldwide in the areas of EAA/T, PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injuries, and also provides clinics and workshops. In 2015, the author received an Award of Excellence from the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame for her contribution to Israeli Society helping challenged and disabled people through Therapeutic Riding .
