“EAST” is an explanatory theory of how change happens for humans during equine-assisted services. Listen as these authors discuss this theory that looks at the mind-body experiences of both human and horse within the context of the environment. They will share their volvelle, a fun tool for researchers and clinicians.

About the speakers:

Noreen Esposito Ed.D., PMHNP, FAANP is a nurse psychotherapist, an associate professor emerita from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, and a fellow in the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She spent her academic career teaching, in clinical practice, and as a qualitative researcher focused on patient-provider interactions.She’s transferred her curiosity about patient experiences in health settings to client experiences in horse settings. She has a private practice that includes Knowing Horse where she provides equine-assisted interventions for adults, university students, and health professionals. Noreen holds advanced certification in the Eagala Model and is a founding member of Arenas for Change. She is a published author in peer-reviewed journals, and co-authored “How Change Happens in Equine-Assisted Interventions: A Theory of Horses, Humans, and Psychotherapy.” She lives with two mini dachshunds, Liesl and Emmy and visits her horse, a mustang named Lion, most days of the week.

Angie Fournier has a PhD in clinical psychology and is a licensed psychologist in Minnesota. She is certified to provide psychotherapy and learning incorporating horses, co-facilitating sessions at Eagle Vista Ranch & Wellness Center in Bemidji, MN. She serves on the editorial board for the journal Human-Animal Interactions. As a professor in the department of psychology at Bemidji State University, she is director of the Humanimal Interaction Laboratory. She and her team research the psychological processes and outcomes of human-animal interaction, focusing on theory development and instrument validation. Dr. Fournier has authored several peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, is author of the book - “Animal-Assisted Intervention: Thinking Empirically” and co-author of the book “How Change Happens in Equine-Assisted Interventions: A Theory of Horses, Humans, and Psychotherapy.”
